You've got the APK ready. You open Settings → Install unknown apps, find your browser in the list — and the toggle is greyed out. Dead. Tapping does nothing. It's a special kind of frustrating because the phone won't even tell you why it refuses. The reasons are a short list, though: you're on the wrong screen, a device admin or work policy is blocking it, parental controls are in play, or the installer system app itself is glitching. Five fixes, most likely first. Covers Android 10 through 14.

Quick Answer: Since Android 8, there's no global switch — the permission is per app. Go to Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps, tap the app you install from (Chrome, Files), and toggle Allow from this source. If the toggle itself is grey, a device admin, work profile, or parental control is overriding it — check Settings → Security → Device admin apps.
In This Guide:
Why the Toggle Is Greyed Out
First, the conceptual trap: on modern Android there is no master "Unknown sources" switch anymore. Every guide showing one global toggle is describing Android 7 or older. Today you grant it per source app — and most "greyed out" reports come from looking at the wrong screen:
- Wrong screen — you're trying to toggle something that was never meant to be toggled globally.
- Device admin app — a security or company app with admin rights can lock the setting.
- Work profile policy — company-managed profiles commonly forbid sideloading entirely.
- Parental controls / Family Link — a parent-managed account locks installs by design.
- Glitching Package Installer — the system installer app itself can wedge, greying out related UI.
Fix 1: Enable It Per-App (The Right Screen)
Nine times out of ten, this is the entire fix — you were just in the wrong place:

- Open Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.
Samsung: Settings → Apps → ⋮ → Special access → Install unknown apps.
Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps → ⋮ → Special access (wording varies by HyperOS version) — or search Settings for "Install unknown apps". - You'll see a list of apps (Chrome, Files, etc.). Tap the one you'll install from.
- Toggle Allow from this source ON.
- Now install your APK through that app.
If this toggle works fine, you never had a problem — just the wrong screen. If it's greyed out too, keep going.
Quickest way to the right screen: open Settings and type "Install unknown apps" in the search bar. It jumps you straight to the per-app list on Samsung, Pixel, and Xiaomi alike — no menu hunting.
Fix 2: Check Device Admin and Work Policies
Device admin apps can veto security settings silently:
- Settings → Security → Device admin apps (Samsung: Settings → Security and privacy → Other security settings → Device admin apps).
- Review the list. Company device managers, aggressive antivirus apps, or "find my phone" tools with admin rights can block sideloading.
- Deactivate anything you don't recognize or no longer need — then retry the toggle.
- Work profile? If your phone has a managed work profile (briefcase-badge apps), its admin policy may forbid unknown sources phone-wide. That's your IT department's call — you can't override it.
Fix 3: Check Parental Controls and Family Link
On a child/supervised account, this toggle is locked on purpose:
- Check Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls — is parental control active?
- Google Family Link: the parent/guardian must allow installs — open Family Link → the child's account → Controls → App limits / Google Play and review install permissions.
- If this is your own unmanaged phone and Family Link is somehow attached, remove the supervision from the parent's Family Link app.
Fix 4: Clear the Package Installer's Cache
The system component that handles installs can glitch and grey out its own UI:

- Settings → Apps → ⋮ → Show system (or Show system apps).
- Find Package Installer (may appear as com.android.packageinstaller).
- Storage → Clear cache (cache only).
- Restart the phone and retry the toggle.
Fix 5: Reset App Preferences
Clears any tangled system state around install permissions without deleting anything:
- Settings → Apps → ⋮ → Reset app preferences → confirm.
- No apps or data are deleted.
- Return to Install unknown apps and try the per-app toggle again.
What If Nothing Works?
- Guest / restricted user: secondary users often can't change security settings — switch to the owner profile (Settings → System → Multiple users).
- Carrier-locked firmware: a few carrier builds disable sideloading permanently. A different install source (Play Store, manufacturer's store) is the workaround.
- Try the APK via ADB: from a computer, adb install app.apk bypasses the on-phone toggle entirely.
- Factory reset: absolute last resort for a corrupted settings database. Back up first.
- Check for a pending system update: Settings → About phone → Check for updates — settings-database bugs get patched in OS updates.

FAQs
Why is 'Install unknown apps' greyed out for Chrome?
Usually a device admin app, work profile policy, or parental control is overriding it. Check Settings → Security → Device admin apps first (Fix 2).
Is there still a global Unknown sources switch on Android?
No — since Android 8 (Oreo), the permission is granted per app under Special app access → Install unknown apps. Any guide showing a global toggle is outdated.
Is sideloading APKs safe?
It bypasses Play Protect's full screening, so stick to trusted sources (the developer's site, APKMirror). Keep Play Protect scanning on and only enable the permission for the one app you install from.
