You used to glance at the status bar and see "VoLTE" sitting next to the signal bars. Now it is gone. Calls drop to an older network, voice quality sounds thin, and browsing crawls to a halt every time someone rings you. Or maybe the toggle itself has vanished from settings and you cannot find the switch anywhere.
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) routes your calls through the 4G network instead of an older circuit-switched fallback. When it stops working, the cause is almost always one of three things: the switch got turned off, your carrier has not provisioned it on your line, or the phone needs a fresh registration with the network. The 6 fixes below are ordered the way they tend to solve it — quick settings checks first, carrier-side steps last.

Quick Answer
If VoLTE is not working on your Android phone, turn the VoLTE toggle back on in your mobile network settings, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds to force a fresh network registration, and confirm with your carrier that VoLTE is enabled on your plan. A missing toggle usually means the carrier has not allowed it for your device.

Fix 1: Turn the VoLTE Toggle Back On
A system update, a SIM swap, or even a carrier profile push can silently flip the VoLTE switch off. It is the single most common reason people search for this problem, so look here before touching anything else. The toggle also has different names depending on your brand — Samsung calls it "VoLTE calls", Pixel calls it "VoLTE" or "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode", and Xiaomi calls it "Use VoLTE".
- Samsung (One UI): open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → turn on VoLTE calls. On some models the path is Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → the toggle may sit under your SIM's entry.
- Pixel (stock Android): open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap your SIM → turn on VoLTE.
- Xiaomi (HyperOS): open Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → tap your SIM → turn on Use VoLTE.
- After toggling it on, place a test call and watch the status bar — the signal should stay on 4G or 5G during the call instead of dropping to 3G or 2G.

If the toggle is missing entirely, do not panic — that tells you something useful. Android hides the switch when the carrier's configuration file does not permit VoLTE for your device. That points to Fix 2 or Fix 6 rather than a settings problem.
Fix 2: Check Your Carrier Actually Supports VoLTE on Your Plan
Here is the uncomfortable truth about VoLTE: your phone can support it perfectly, the switch can be on, and calls can still refuse to use it — because VoLTE needs your carrier to have your line provisioned for it. Some prepaid or regional plans exclude VoLTE, some older SIM cards predate the carrier's VoLTE rollout, and some carriers keep a device-approval list your exact model has to be on.
- Call or message your carrier's support and ask two questions: is VoLTE active on my line, and is my device model on your supported list?
- If you are on a prepaid plan, check the plan details — certain budget tiers historically excluded HD voice features.
- Ask whether your SIM card is a newer one. A SIM issued before your carrier's VoLTE launch sometimes never gets the right profile.
- On dual-SIM phones, confirm which SIM is set for calls — VoLTE often only works on the data-default SIM. Go to Settings → Connections (or Network & internet) → SIM manager and check the "calls" assignment.

Fix 3: Restart and Toggle Airplane Mode for 30 Seconds
Even when the toggle is on and the carrier is fine, your phone still has to complete something called IMS registration — basically checking in with the carrier's voice servers over 4G. A stale registration is why VoLTE can show "on" yet do nothing. Airplane mode forces the phone to drop the connection and register fresh, which clears this more often than people expect.
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open the full Quick Settings panel.
- Tap Airplane mode and leave it on for a full 30 seconds — count it out, shorter bursts sometimes do not fully drop the radio.
- Turn airplane mode off and wait up to a minute for the signal to return.
- Now do a full restart: hold the power button, tap Restart, and wait for the phone to boot.
- Check the status bar for the VoLTE or HD indicator, then place a test call to confirm the network stays on 4G during it.
Fix 4: Reset Your APN to Default
The Access Point Name (APN) profile tells your phone how to talk to the carrier's data and voice gateways. APN profiles can get mangled by updates, SIM swaps, or travel roaming — and VoLTE depends on the right profile values, particularly the IMS entries. Resetting to default pulls the carrier's correct profile back without you typing anything by hand.
- Open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names (on Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your SIM → Access point names).
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top corner and choose Reset to default.
- Confirm, then restart the phone so the new profile takes effect.
- If your carrier gave you specific APN values in the past and they worked, re-enter only those fields and leave everything else on default.
Do not hand-type a full APN from a random forum — one wrong field can knock out data entirely. The reset is safer than guessing.
Fix 5: Update Carrier Services and Your Android Version
VoLTE on Android is partly powered by an app called Carrier Services, published by Google, which handles advanced network features in the background. An outdated or glitched version can break VoLTE silently. Android system updates also regularly ship carrier-profile fixes that restore a missing toggle.
- Open the Play Store, search for Carrier Services, and tap Update if one is available.
- Go to Settings → Software update → Download and install (Samsung) or Settings → System → System update (Pixel/Xiaomi) and install anything pending.
- Restart after both updates, then check whether the VoLTE toggle has returned and calls stay on 4G.
- On Samsung, also check Settings → About phone → Carrier settings for a pending carrier-profile update.
Fix 6: Contact Your Carrier or Get a Replacement SIM
If you have worked through the first five fixes and VoLTE still refuses to work, the remaining suspects are all on the carrier's side: your line is not provisioned, your SIM is too old to hold a VoLTE profile, or your account has a flag nobody told you about. This is a phone call (or store visit), not a settings page.
- Contact your carrier's support and describe exactly what you tried — toggle on, airplane toggle, APN reset, updates.
- Ask them to verify IMS/VoLTE provisioning on your line and to re-push the carrier profile.
- Request a SIM replacement (usually free or a small fee). New SIMs carry current profiles; old ones sometimes cannot.
- While you are at it, ask whether your device model is on their approved VoLTE list — grey-import or unlocked phones are the usual victims here.
If the carrier confirms everything is provisioned on their end and the toggle exists but calls still drop to 3G, have them check for a faulty network-side registration — and if nothing changes, a service center can verify the phone's radio hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there no VoLTE option in my settings at all?
Android only shows the toggle when the carrier's configuration permits VoLTE for your device model on that network. A missing switch almost always means the carrier has not enabled it for you — contact them before changing anything else.
Does VoLTE use my mobile data?
No. VoLTE rides on the LTE network but is billed as voice, not data, on most plans. Browsing and apps keep their normal data speeds during a VoLTE call, which is exactly why the feature exists.
Why do my calls still drop to 3G even with VoLTE on?
Usually one of two things: the IMS registration did not complete (try Fix 3), or your carrier has not provisioned your line (Fix 2). If it happens only in certain areas, your carrier may simply lack VoLTE coverage there.
Is VoLTE free?
On most carriers it is included at no extra charge and calls are billed at your normal voice rate. A few prepaid plans exclude it, so check your plan details if in doubt.
