The 6-digit code screen is the worst place to get stuck. Your chats are on the other side of it, and the SMS with the key just… never arrives. Take a breath — this is fixable, and the cause is usually embarrassingly small. A mistyped digit. A napping SIM. A spam folder doing its job a little too well. One rule before you start: don't guess codes and don't hammer resend. Every wrong guess can buy you a longer wait.

Quick Answer: No verification code? First re-check your country code and full number — typos are the most common cause. Then prove your SIM receives normal SMS by having someone text you. If that works, let the in-app timer finish and tap "Didn't receive a verification code?" → Call me for the code as an automated voice call. And never guess codes: wrong entries can temporarily lock verification, so always wait out the official timer between attempts.

Why the WhatsApp Verification Code Doesn't Arrive
WhatsApp sends the code by SMS first, with a voice call as backup. When neither shows up, the break is usually somewhere in the delivery chain between WhatsApp, your carrier, and your phone — not inside the app. The usual suspects:
- Wrong country code or digits — a missing "+" or dropped digit sends the code to somebody else's number entirely.
- Inactive or loose SIM — a new, expired, or badly seated SIM receives nothing, verification texts included.
- Carrier filtering — some carriers, especially on prepaid or freshly activated lines, block automated and short-code SMS by default.
- Too many requests — rapid-fire code requests trigger temporary restrictions that delay the next ones.
- Spam filters on the phone — your messaging app quietly filing the code into a spam or blocked folder.
- VPN or network glitches — a VPN meddling with the registration handshake, or a stale connection delaying delivery.
Fix 1: Enter the Full International Number Correctly
Thirty seconds that solve more cases than everything else on this page: check what you actually typed. A "missing" code very often arrived just fine — on someone else's number:
- On the number entry screen, tap the country code field and confirm your country (e.g. +92 for Pakistan). WhatsApp guesses from your SIM, and on dual-SIM phones it guesses wrong regularly.
- Type the full number with no leading zero. Local numbers starting with 0 drop that zero here — WhatsApp wants +92 3XX XXXXXXX, not +92 03XX XXXXXXX.
- Strip spaces, dashes, brackets. Then read the confirmation screen out loud before tapping OK — WhatsApp shows the full number one last time precisely so you can catch the mistake.
- Already submitted a wrong number? Wait for the edit number option on the timer screen and fix it there instead of starting over.
One careful entry beats three rushed retries — partly because codes requested to a wrong number can slow down delivery to the right one.
Fix 2: Confirm Your SIM Can Receive Regular SMS
Number's right, nothing arrives. Now find out whether your line receives ordinary texts at all — that single test tells you whether the problem is your SIM, your signal, or WhatsApp's delivery:
- Ask someone to send you a plain SMS. If even that never lands, it's your SIM or signal — not WhatsApp.
- Weak signal? Move near a window or step outside, then retry once the timer allows.
- Recently ported or activated the SIM? Carriers sometimes need a few hours before automated SMS works reliably on a fresh line.
- Dual-SIM phone: confirm the right SIM sits in the right slot and is set as default for calls and SMS. Check Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Pixel), Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Samsung), or Settings → Mobile network (Xiaomi).

If regular SMS arrives fine but the WhatsApp code doesn't, your line is healthy — skip ahead to Fix 4.
Fix 3: Never Guess — Respect the Resend Timer
Read this before you touch Resend again. When the code is late, mashing resend or typing a hopeful guess feels productive. It isn't — both can stretch your waiting period. WhatsApp throttles verification after too many failed attempts, and the app tells you exactly how long you're locked out:
- Let the countdown timer on the verification screen run to zero. It can take several minutes. That's normal.
- When it ends, tap Resend SMS exactly once — then put the phone down and wait.
- Still nothing after that? Use the Call me option (Fix 4) instead of another SMS resend.
- Already burned several wrong guesses? Stop and serve the lockout. The screen shows the duration — usually hours, not days. Trying early resets the clock.
Fix 4: Use the "Call Me" Voice Call Option
When SMS won't cooperate — classic on lines where carriers filter automated texts — WhatsApp has a second delivery route most people never notice: the code as an automated voice call. Official feature, and it regularly succeeds where SMS fails:
- On the verification screen, after the first timer finishes, tap "Didn't receive a verification code?"
- Choose "Call me." WhatsApp rings your number and a recorded voice reads out the 6 digits.
- Keep the line free — don't reject or divert the call, and pause any call-blocking app (Truecaller and friends) so it can't intercept it.
- Write the code down as you hear it. The automated voice talks fast.
The voice option typically appears once the SMS timer has run out on a failed attempt. If it shows up, take it — there's no prize for waiting on a fifth SMS when the call route is open.
Fix 5: Unblock SMS Filters, DND, and Spam Folders
Plot twist: the code arrived. Your phone just hid it. Automated texts from short numbers are exactly what spam filters and call-blocker apps love to swallow:
- Open your messaging app and check Spam, Blocked, or Junk. Samsung Messages: three-dot menu → Settings → Block numbers and spam → Blocked messages. Google Messages: profile picture → Spam & blocked.
- Code's in there? Mark it "Not spam" so the next one lands in your inbox.
- Temporarily switch off third-party SMS filters and call blockers while you verify — re-enable them after.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb during verification. On some phones it can mute the alert for the incoming text and you'll miss the window.
- Running a VPN? Disconnect it for now — VPNs can tangle the registration handshake between WhatsApp and its servers.

Fix 6: Update WhatsApp, Restart, and Reset Network Settings
Number's right, SIM's healthy, filters clear — then the last layer is the device itself. A stale app or a glitched network stack can silently break the verification handshake:
- Open the Play Store, find WhatsApp, tap Update if one's waiting. Registration flows change server-side too; an old client can fall out of sync.
- Restart the phone properly — power fully off for 30 seconds, then on. This refreshes the tower connection, not just the screen.
- Reset network settings (clears stale carrier data; your files and chats stay put):
- Samsung (One UI): Settings → General management → Reset → Reset network settings
- Pixel: Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth
- Xiaomi (HyperOS): Settings → Connection & sharing → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth
- Last resort before reinstalling: back up chats (WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup), uninstall, reinstall from the Play Store, verify fresh.
Still nothing? Contact WhatsApp directly — WhatsApp → Settings → Help → Contact Us from any working install, or whatsapp.com/contact in a browser, choosing the registration/phone-verification option. Include your number with country code and one line: normal SMS works, the code never arrives.
If You Still Can't Verify Your Number
Traveling abroad? Make sure the SIM still receives SMS on roaming — some carriers need roaming data or a specific setting enabled for it. And the obvious-but-critical: never share a verification code with anyone. Sharing it hands them your account. If repeated requests earned you a hard restriction, WhatsApp's own guidance is to wait out the displayed period. There is no shortcut around it, and anyone selling one is selling your account.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should the WhatsApp code normally take?
A few minutes, usually. If the in-app timer finishes with no code, request one resend — then switch to the "Call me" voice option instead of waiting on SMS again. Persistent delays point at carrier filtering or a wrong number, not WhatsApp's servers being slow.
Why does WhatsApp say I've requested too many codes?
That's the throttling kicking in: too many code requests — or too many wrong guesses — in a short window, and WhatsApp temporarily restricts further attempts to stop abuse. The screen shows how long the lock lasts. Wait it out fully; trying early just restarts the timer. When it lifts, request once and use the voice-call option if SMS already failed you twice.
Can I get the verification code by email instead?
No. WhatsApp verifies phone numbers by SMS or voice call only — email isn't a supported route for registration. If SMS keeps failing, the voice call is the official alternative; beyond that, it's WhatsApp support at whatsapp.com/contact, not a third-party "code sender" (those are scams).
