WhatsApp Status Not Loading? 5 Fixes (2026)

You open the Status tab and get... nothing. A blank screen, an endless spinner, a status that refuses to open. Meanwhile your chats work perfectly — which is exactly what makes this so confusing. Here's the thing: statuses are photos and short videos streamed from WhatsApp's servers, while texts barely sip any data. So a connection that's "fine" for chatting can still be too weak for status. Five fixes, easiest first.

WhatsApp status tab stuck on loading screen on Android with troubleshooting fixes

Quick Answer: Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and load a webpage to confirm you're genuinely online. Then force stop WhatsApp and clear its cache at Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage & cache → Clear cache — chats stay untouched. Those two steps fix it in the vast majority of cases.

Why Statuses Get Stuck

Statuses need two things texts don't: real bandwidth and a healthy media cache. When the Status tab stalls, it's almost always one of these:

  • A weak or flaky connection — enough for messages, not enough for streaming media.
  • A corrupted WhatsApp cache — stale status files that never refresh.
  • An active VPN or proxy — routing traffic through distant servers, or tripping WhatsApp's security checks.
  • An outdated app version — media-loading bugs that newer releases already fixed.
  • A nearly full phone — no room to download and cache the status media.

And one thing that isn't an error: if a contact hasn't saved your number, or restricted their status audience, you simply won't see their updates. That's privacy working as designed. Covers Android 10 through 14.

Fix 1: Check Your Internet Connection

Thirty seconds, and it rules out the most common cause. Don't trust the Wi-Fi icon — actually test the connection:

  1. Open your browser and load a webpage, or play a short YouTube video. Stalls there too? It's the connection, not WhatsApp.
  2. Switch networks: on Wi-Fi, turn it off and try mobile data; on mobile data, hop onto Wi-Fi instead.
  3. Toggle Airplane mode ON for 10 seconds, then OFF — forces a fresh network handshake.
  4. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router — or restart the router (unplug 10 seconds, plug back in).
  5. Reopen WhatsApp and pull down on the Status tab to refresh.

Fix 2: Force Stop WhatsApp and Clear Its Cache

Second most common cause, and completely safe: clearing the cache wipes temporary status files without touching chats, contacts, or downloaded media.

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Force stop and confirm — this shuts the app down fully so the cache clear actually takes.
  3. Tap Storage & cache (or Storage).
  4. Tap Clear cache. Not "Clear data" — that logs you out and forces number re-verification.
  5. Open WhatsApp, give it a few seconds to reload, and check the Status tab.

Statuses loading now? It was the cache. File this one away — it works again whenever statuses start acting up.

Fix 3: Turn Off Your VPN or Proxy

VPNs can route WhatsApp traffic through a server on another continent, throttle media downloads, or trip WhatsApp's security protections. Any of those leaves the Status tab hanging on its loader.

  1. Open your VPN app and tap Disconnect — or go to Settings → Network & internet → VPN (Samsung: Settings → Connections → More connection settings → VPN) and disconnect the active profile.
  2. Using a proxy app (DNS changer, ad-block VPN)? Disable that too, temporarily.
  3. Reopen WhatsApp and refresh the Status tab.

Statuses load with the VPN off? The VPN server was the bottleneck. Either switch to a server closer to your country, or just run the VPN when you actually need it.

Fix 4: Update WhatsApp to the Latest Version

WhatsApp ships media-loading bug fixes regularly, and status glitches are exactly the kind of thing a new release quietly repairs. Old app + new phone update is a classic mismatch.

  1. Open the Play Store and search WhatsApp Messenger.
  2. If there's an Update button, tap it and wait.
  3. Open WhatsApp and check the Status tab.

No update available and statuses still broken? Then the app version probably isn't the issue — the cause is more likely connection, cache, or server-side. Skip the beta programs (unstable builds cause more problems than they solve) and keep working through this guide.

Fix 5: Free Up Phone Storage

WhatsApp needs elbow room to download status photos and videos. A phone gasping for storage can fail to fetch them at all — placeholders, endless loaders, the works.

  1. Open Settings → Storage — aim for at least 1 GB free.
  2. In WhatsApp: three-dot menu → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage to see which chats hog the most space.
  3. Delete large videos and forwarded junk you don't need — or back them up and remove them from the phone.
  4. Restart the phone, reopen WhatsApp, check statuses.

One more thing worth knowing: WhatsApp's Manage storage screen sorts chats by size, biggest first — start at the top and you'll usually free hundreds of megabytes from just two or three chats full of forwarded videos. If you're on a phone with an SD card, moving your photo and video folders there also takes pressure off internal storage, which is what WhatsApp actually cares about.

What If Nothing Works?

Still stuck after all five? A few last possibilities:

  • Status privacy. You can't see someone's status if they haven't saved your number, or if they excluded you via WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy → Status. Not an error — ask a mutual contact whether it loads for them.
  • WhatsApp itself is down. If messages, statuses, and calls all fail together, check Downdetector — sometimes you just have to wait it out.
  • Restart the phone. Clears stuck network states and background processes in one shot.
  • Reinstall as a last resort. Back up chats first (Settings → Chats → Chat backup), uninstall, reinstall from the Play Store, restore the backup.

FAQs

Why can I send messages but statuses won't load?

Texts need almost no bandwidth; statuses are photos and videos that need a stable, faster connection. A shaky connection carries chats fine while choking on media. Flip between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try streaming a short video — if that struggles too, the connection's the cause.

Will clearing the WhatsApp cache delete my chats?

No. Cache-clearing only dumps temporary files — cached status previews, thumbnails. Chats, contacts, and downloaded media stay put. Just hit Clear cache, never Clear data (that one logs you out).

Why can I see some contacts' statuses but not others?

Almost certainly privacy, not a bug: they haven't saved your number, or they limited their audience in WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy → Status. Also remember statuses expire after 24 hours — yesterday's status may simply be gone.
