You open the Shorts tab. Thumbnails blink in. You tap one — and the spinner just spins. Here's the strange part: regular YouTube videos play perfectly. Only Shorts refuse to load.
That split is the clue. Shorts don't stream like regular videos. They load as a rapid chain of short segments, each one fetched on demand as you scroll. That design makes them feel instant when things work — and far more fragile when they don't. A hiccup your brain would never notice in a ten-minute video can stall a Shorts feed completely. The six fixes below target the actual weak points, in the order most people should try them.

Quick Answer: YouTube Shorts usually fail to load because of a corrupted app cache, an unstable connection, or an outdated app build. Force-stop YouTube, clear its cache under Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage, and install any pending update from the Play Store. If the spinner persists, toggle Airplane mode on and off — or sign out of YouTube and sign back in.

Fix 1: Make Sure Your Connection Is Actually Solid
Before touching a single setting, confirm the basics. Open Chrome and load a page or two. If pages crawl, your connection — not YouTube — is the problem. Shorts need a steady few megabits per second; a quick speed test tells you the truth in seconds.
- Toggle Airplane mode. Turn it on, wait five seconds, then turn it off. This forces a fresh network connection and clears temporary routing glitches that stall the Shorts feed specifically.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Retry Shorts immediately on the other connection — this isolates which one is misbehaving.
- Move closer to the router if you're on Wi-Fi, and pause a streaming device or two if the house is busy. Shorts stall fast on a congested network.
- Reboot the router. Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and retest once it's fully online.
Fix 2: Force-Stop YouTube and Reopen It
A hung playback process is one of the most common reasons Shorts stop loading while the rest of the app works fine. The regular video player and the Shorts player are different components — one can jam while the other hums along.
- Open Settings → Apps → YouTube.
- Tap Force Stop, then confirm.
- Wait a few seconds, reopen YouTube, and head straight to the Shorts tab.
Force-stopping deletes nothing — it just kills a stuck process. If Shorts loaded fine yesterday and broke today, this is often all it takes.
Fix 3: Clear the YouTube App Cache
Cached thumbnails, feed layouts, and expired video segments pile up quietly in the background. When part of that cache corrupts, the Shorts feed — which depends on it heavily — can refuse to load even though your connection is perfect.
- Go to Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage & cache (on Samsung's One UI: Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage; on Xiaomi's HyperOS: Settings → Apps → Manage apps → YouTube → Storage).
- Tap Clear Cache. Your account, subscriptions, and watch history stay untouched.
- Reopen YouTube and try Shorts again.

If the cache alone doesn't do it, the stronger version is Clear Storage (labeled "Clear data" on some phones) — but know what you're signing up for: it logs you out and wipes your offline downloads. Your subscriptions and history live in your Google account, so they return the moment you sign back in.
Fix 4: Update YouTube — or Roll Back a Bad Update
YouTube updates ship constantly, and a buggy release can break Shorts specifically while long videos keep playing. If your Shorts broke right around the time the app updated, that's a strong signal.
- Open the Play Store, search YouTube, and tap Update if one is available. These steps cover Android 10 through 14.
- Already up to date, and Shorts broke right after updating? Roll back: Play Store → YouTube → tap the three-dot menu → Uninstall updates. This restores the factory version that shipped with your phone.
- Test Shorts on the factory version. If they work, the update was the problem — wait for the next release before updating again.
One more thing worth checking in the Play Store: tap your profile picture → Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps. If it's set to "Over Wi-Fi only" and you've been on mobile data for weeks, the fix you need may simply never have arrived.
Fix 5: Turn Off Data Saver and Battery Restrictions
Android's battery-saving features treat Shorts' constant preloading as wasteful background activity. On aggressive power-saving profiles, the system can throttle the very network requests the Shorts feed needs — leaving you with an endless spinner on an otherwise healthy phone.
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver and turn it off (temporarily is fine for testing).
- Go to Settings → Apps → YouTube → Battery and set it to Unrestricted. On Pixel phones the option reads App battery usage → Allow background usage; on Samsung it's Battery → Unrestricted.
- In the YouTube app itself, tap your profile picture → Settings → General and check that any data-saving toggle is off while you test.

Fix 6: Sign Out and Sign Back In
When Shorts refuse to load on every network, with a fresh cache and a current app, the account session itself can be the problem. A stale or partially invalid session can break the personalized Shorts feed while everything else limps along.
- In YouTube, tap your profile picture → Sign out. This signs you out of YouTube only — your Google account stays on the phone.
- While you're at it, check Settings → System → Date & time and make sure Set time automatically is switched on. A wrong clock breaks the secure tokens YouTube uses to fetch your feed.
- Restart the phone, sign back into YouTube, and open the Shorts tab. Give the feed a few seconds to rebuild.

YouTube Shorts Not Loading — FAQs
Why do Shorts fail to load while regular YouTube videos play fine?
Shorts and long videos use different delivery pipelines. Shorts load as quick, on-demand segments while you scroll, so they're more sensitive to connection stutter, cache corruption, and app bugs that long-form playback can simply buffer through unnoticed.
Will clearing YouTube's data delete my downloads or subscriptions?
Clear Cache never touches them. Clear Storage (Clear data) removes offline downloads and signs you out — but subscriptions, playlists, and watch history live in your Google account and return the moment you sign back in. Re-download anything you'd saved offline.
Shorts broke right after a YouTube update. Is that normal?
It happens more often than it should. Buggy releases occasionally break the Shorts feed while leaving everything else working. Rolling back with "Uninstall updates" in the Play Store usually restores them — then wait for the next update before upgrading again.
