Gallery Not Showing Photos? 6 Fixes (2026)

Deep breath: your photos are almost certainly still there. When a gallery stops showing pictures, the files are usually sitting untouched in storage — the app has simply lost track of them.

That's because your gallery doesn't browse files directly. It reads a media database Android maintains — a catalog of every photo on the phone. Break the catalog and you get empty albums: a hidden .nomedia file excluding a folder, a stale cache, a permission revoked by an update, or new photos landing somewhere the gallery isn't looking. Six fixes below, ordered by likelihood. Covers Android 10 through 14, with Samsung One UI, Pixel, and Xiaomi HyperOS notes.

Android gallery app not showing photos with troubleshooting fixes for missing pictures

Quick Answer: Missing photos but the files exist? First suspect: a .nomedia file hiding the folder. Open your file manager, enable "Show hidden files", look inside the affected folder, and delete any .nomedia you find — then restart. Next, clear the gallery app's cache (Settings → Apps → Gallery → Storage & cache → Clear cache) and confirm it has Photos / Storage permission set to Allow. One of those three brings the pictures back in the large majority of cases.

Five usual reasons, and every one of them is a settings problem — not lost files:

  • A .nomedia file in the folder, telling Android to hide everything inside it from gallery apps.
  • A corrupted gallery cache showing an outdated, empty album list.
  • Missing storage/photos permission — often revoked silently by an app update or a phone reset.
  • Media visibility switched off in WhatsApp or a similar app, so new downloads never reach the gallery.
  • Photos sitting in the gallery's trash, or on a failing SD card, instead of the main album view.

Start at Fix 1 if one specific folder went missing. Start at Fix 3 if every album is empty. WhatsApp photos in particular → jump to Fix 5.

Fix 1: Check for a Hidden .nomedia File

This tiny file is behind more "missing photo" panics than everything else combined. When Android spots a file named .nomedia inside a folder, it excludes the whole folder from the gallery. These get left behind by cleaner apps, backup restores, and file transfers — you never put it there yourself:

  1. Open your file manager (Samsung: My Files; Pixel: Files by Google; Xiaomi: File Manager).
  2. Tap the menu (three dots) and switch on "Show hidden files".
  3. Open the folder whose photos vanished — DCIM/, Pictures/, or a WhatsApp folder.
  4. See a file called .nomedia? Delete it.
  5. Restart the phone so Android rescans your media, then reopen the gallery.

Deleting the .nomedia hidden file in an Android file manager to restore missing gallery photos

Found it and deleted it? Your photos should reappear within a minute or two of the restart. Nothing named .nomedia in there? Move on — the catalog itself is the next suspect.

When the .nomedia hunt comes up empty, blame the gallery's own memory. A stale or corrupted cache keeps serving an old album list even though the files changed underneath it. Clearing it forces a rebuild — and no, it doesn't touch your photos:

  1. Settings → Apps (Samsung: Settings → Apps; Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps).
  2. Find your gallery app — Gallery, Photos, whatever you use.
  3. Tap Storage & cache (or just Storage).
  4. Tap Clear cache. Leave Clear data alone for now — that resets settings and signs you out of synced accounts.
  5. Reopen the gallery and give it a minute to reload the albums.

Still empty? Now you may try Clear data as well — reopen the app afterwards and let it re-scan storage from scratch.

Fix 3: Grant Storage or Photos Permission

A gallery with no storage permission is a gallery with nothing to show. This one bites after Android updates, denied permission prompts, and phone restores — the app looks fine, it just can't read a single file:

  1. Settings → Apps → tap your gallery app → Permissions.
  2. Find Photos and videos (or Storage on older Android).
  3. Set it to Allow — on Android 13 and newer, pick Allow all so every folder is visible, not just selected ones.
  4. Reopen the gallery; albums should fill in within moments.

Bonus check while you're in Permissions: your file manager app. If the gallery leans on a system file provider that lost access, re-granting it can unstick the gallery too.

Fix 4: Restart Your Phone to Rescan Media

Copy photos from a computer, restore a backup, move an SD card between phones — and Android's media database falls out of sync. The files are there; the catalog just doesn't know yet. A full restart is what triggers a fresh scan:

  1. Hold the power button and choose Restart (a real restart, not power-off-and-on, so everything reloads cleanly).
  2. After booting, wait another minute or two before opening the gallery — the media scan needs that head start.
  3. Now check: missing albums back?

Still nothing? Plug the phone into a computer over USB and look inside the folder directly. Files present → it's purely a gallery/catalog problem (keep going). Files absent → they were never copied, and no gallery fix will conjure them.

Fix 5: Turn On Media Visibility in WhatsApp and Other Apps

The classic variant: camera photos show fine, but WhatsApp photos never appear. That's WhatsApp's Media visibility setting doing its job a little too well — it controls whether downloads land in the gallery, and it loves to switch itself off after a reinstall:

  1. Open WhatsApp → three-dot menu → Settings → Chats.
  2. Media visibility → ON.
  3. For one specific chat: open it, tap the contact/group name → Media visibility → Yes.
  4. Download a photo in that chat — it should now appear under a WhatsApp Images album.

Telegram, Messenger, and Instagram each have their own "save to gallery" equivalent. Whichever app's photos are missing, check its version of this setting.

Last app-level suspect: the gallery itself. Old versions choke on newer formats (HEIC/HEIF photos are the usual victims) and can clash with recent Android updates:

  1. Play Store → search your gallery app (e.g. Google Photos) → Update if offered.
  2. Samsung: also check the Galaxy Store for Samsung Gallery updates.
  3. Already current? Settings → Apps → Gallery → three-dot menu → Uninstall updates, then reinstall fresh from the store.
  4. Reopen and wait a minute while it rebuilds the album list.

What If Nothing Works?

Before concluding the files are gone, run this checklist:

  • Gallery trash: open the Trash / Recently deleted album — deleted photos linger there (roughly 30 days in Samsung Gallery, about 60 in Google Photos) and can be restored with one tap.
  • SD card: reseat it, or test it in another device. A dying card vanishes from the gallery intermittently — see our guide on SD card not detected on Android.
  • Cloud backup: open photos.google.com on a computer. If backup was on, your pictures are safe there even if the phone can't see them.
  • Different gallery app: install any simple gallery from the Play Store. If it shows your photos, the original app is the problem — not your files.
  • Storage space: a nearly-full phone can fail to finish media scans. Free up room — our speed-up guide covers the quick wins.

FAQs

My storage is almost full and the gallery shows nothing. Related?

Directly. When free space runs out, Android can't complete its media scan, so the gallery has no catalog to display. Free up 1–2 GB — unused apps, cached files, old videos — then restart so the scan can finish.

Does deleting a .nomedia file delete my photos?

No. It only unhides the folder — your photos were never touched. After deleting it and restarting, everything reappears. Just watch your step while hidden files are visible so you don't delete actual photos by accident.

Camera photos appear but WhatsApp photos don't. Why?

That's WhatsApp's Media visibility being off, or a .nomedia file sitting in the WhatsApp Images folder. Enable Media visibility under WhatsApp → Settings → Chats, sweep the WhatsApp folders for .nomedia, restart — done.
