There's a particular frustration in picking up your phone and finding five WhatsApp messages that arrived hours ago — silently. No banner, no buzz, no badge. Someone asked you something urgent at noon; you reply at dinner and apologise to a conversation that's already over.
Most guides treat this as one switch. It isn't. A WhatsApp notification has to survive a relay with several runners: WhatsApp must decide to alert you, Android must allow the alert in the right category, the phone must let the app start and stay awake to receive the message, and nothing — not Do Not Disturb, not Data Saver, not a forgotten mute — may intercept it. Breaks happen at predictable links, so before you start, triage your symptom: nothing arrives at all → start at Fix 1. Only some chats are quiet → skip to Fix 5. Alerts arrive minutes late, in a burst when you unlock → Fixes 3, 4, and 7 are your story.

Quick Answer: Work the relay in order. In WhatsApp: ⋮ → Settings → Notifications — message, group, and call alerts on, each with a real tone (not None). In Android: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Notifications — every category set to Alerting, not Silent. Then the biggest culprit of all: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery → Unrestricted, so the system stops sleeping the app — plus Autostart on Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo phones. Finish with a glance at Do Not Disturb schedules and muted chats.
Fix 1: Set WhatsApp's Own Alerts First
Twenty seconds inside the app. These are the master switches — when they're off, nothing downstream matters — and app updates have a habit of flipping them quietly:

- Open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu (top right), then Settings → Notifications.
- Under Messages: Message notifications on, Conversation tones on, and Notification tone set to an actual sound — not None.
- Under Groups: the same treatment — toggle on, tone selected.
- Under Calls: Call notifications on, or incoming WhatsApp calls won't ring at all.
Set Vibrate and Light as you prefer while you're here — but understand that "None" and "Silent" in these menus mean exactly what they say, forever, until you change them back.
Fix 2: Set Android's Categories to Alerting
Even with WhatsApp's own switches on, Android gets a second vote — and it votes per category. Messages, groups, and calls are separate channels, and any one of them can be silenced independently:
- Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Notifications and confirm the main toggle — Allow notifications / Show notifications — is ON. (Samsung: also check Settings → Notifications → App notifications → WhatsApp is allowed.)
- Open each category — Message notifications, Group notifications, Call notifications — and set it to Alerting, never Silent.
- Inside each category, confirm three things: a sound is picked, pop-up on screen is on, and lock screen display is allowed.
Brand paths: Samsung One UI — Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Notifications; Pixel — Settings → Apps → See all apps → WhatsApp → Notifications; Xiaomi HyperOS — Settings → Apps → Manage apps → WhatsApp → Notifications. Worth knowing: after major system updates, Samsung phones on One UI 7 have been flipping categories back to Silent — if your alerts died right after an update, this fix is probably the whole story.
Fix 3: Stop Battery Optimization From Sleeping WhatsApp
If one fix on this page solves the most cases, it's this one. Battery optimization tucks WhatsApp into a deep sleep to save power — and a sleeping app never wakes up to tell you a message arrived. The telltale sign: a flood of notifications the instant you open WhatsApp, and dead silence otherwise.

- Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery and choose Unrestricted ("Don't optimize" or "No restrictions" on some phones). Pixel: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → App battery usage — allow background usage, battery on Unrestricted.
- Samsung One UI: also open Settings → Battery → Background usage limits — if WhatsApp sits under Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, pull it out.
- Xiaomi HyperOS: set Battery saver → No restrictions on the same app screen (Autostart is the next fix).
- While testing, switch off system-wide Battery Saver too — on many phones it bulldozes per-app settings.
Fix 4: Enable Autostart and Lock the App (Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo)
Chinese-brand phones gatekeep which apps may start themselves — and an app that can't start can't wake for an incoming message after a reboot, or after you've swiped it away. Stock Android doesn't need this fix; these brands do:
- Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps → WhatsApp → Autostart → ON. (Also found in the Security app → Manage apps → Autostart.)
- Oppo / Realme: Settings → Apps → App management → WhatsApp → Allow auto-startup.
- Vivo / iQOO: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Autostart → allow.
- Then lock WhatsApp in Recents (tap the lock icon on its card) so a casual swipe-away doesn't kill it for the rest of the day.
Fix 5: Unmute the One Quiet Chat
Everything works except one person or one group that never notifies you? That's rarely a bug — it's a mute you set months ago and forgot:
- Scan your chat list for the crossed-out speaker icon beside a name — the mark of a muted chat.
- Open the chat, tap the name at the top, and tap Unmute notifications.
- Check Archived chats too: archived conversations suppress alerts on many setups, so long-press and Unarchive anything you want to hear from.
One gotcha: a muted chat can also swallow call alerts from that contact. If one person's calls never ring while everyone else's do, check their mute status before anything else.
Fix 6: Check Do Not Disturb — Including Its Schedules
DND is sneaky because it doesn't have to be on right now — it just has to be scheduled. Night mode, work hours, a Bedtime routine, that "focus" mode you tried once:
- Swipe down to Quick Settings — if Do Not Disturb is lit, turn it off and test.
- Go to Settings → Sound (or Notifications) → Do Not Disturb and inspect the schedules. Disable any you don't want. Samsung: Settings → Notifications → Do not disturb — and check Modes and Routines for a Sleep routine enabling DND. Xiaomi: Settings → Sound & vibration → Do Not Disturb.
- Press a volume button and confirm the ringer profile is actually on sound, not vibrate-only.
Best of both worlds: leave DND on for your sanity, but add WhatsApp to its allowed apps (and star the contacts whose calls must ring). Alerts get through; everything else stays quiet.
Fix 7: Let WhatsApp Use Background Data
Notifications can only announce messages WhatsApp has actually received. With background data restricted, new messages wait until you open the app — and their alerts wait with them:
- Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Mobile data & Wi-Fi (labelled "Data usage" on some phones).
- Switch Background data on, and Unrestricted data usage on too.
- If Data Saver is active (Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver), add WhatsApp to its unrestricted apps list.
- Xiaomi: on the same screen, confirm both mobile data and Wi-Fi access are enabled for WhatsApp.
Think of Fixes 3 and 7 as a pair: battery optimization sleeps the app; a data restriction starves it. Fix only one and missing notifications often become merely delayed ones — do both.
Fix 8: Update, Restart — Then Reinstall With a Backup
When every layer above checks out and it's still quiet, refresh the app and the system, in this order:
- Update WhatsApp from the Play Store — notification bugs are patched quietly and often. Update Google Play Services too, since pushes flow through it.
- Restart the phone. It clears stuck notification channels and re-registers WhatsApp with Android's notification service. Boring advice; works constantly.
- Test properly: message yourself from WhatsApp Web or have someone message you with the screen off — the banner, sound, and badge should all appear within seconds.
- Last resort — reinstall. Back up first: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up, and wait for it to finish. Then uninstall, reinstall from the Play Store, verify your number, and restore when offered. Afterwards, redo Fixes 1–3 — a fresh install reverts to battery-optimized defaults and re-asks for notification permission.
Still Silent? Read the Pattern
By now the pattern itself is diagnostic. Nothing at all, ever: a master switch is off — re-check Fix 1 and Fix 2's main toggle. Messages arrive, but only when you open the app: the app is being slept or starved — Fixes 3, 4, and 7, together, not one at a time. Alerts arrive late, in a burst when you unlock: the same pair, half-applied — re-apply Fix 3 fully (Unrestricted, out of Samsung's sleeping lists, Autostart on Xiaomi) plus Fix 7, restart, and give it an hour. Two rarer causes remain: heavy WhatsApp Web/Desktop use can make the phone defer notifications — log out idle linked devices (WhatsApp → ⋮ → Linked devices); and a VPN or private DNS can interfere with push connections — test with them off. If notifications fail on every phone you own after all of this, the fault is WhatsApp's push infrastructure, not your settings: report it via WhatsApp → Settings → Help → Contact us. Covers Android 10 through 14.

Notification Questions, Answered
Why do I only get WhatsApp messages when I open the app?
Classic battery optimization: WhatsApp is asleep in the background and can't receive pushes until opening it wakes it up. Set Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery → Unrestricted (Fix 3), enable Autostart on Xiaomi, Oppo, or Vivo (Fix 4), allow background data (Fix 7), and restart. Alerts should turn instant.
My WhatsApp calls don't ring, but messages alert fine. Why?
Because calls have their own channel at both layers. Check WhatsApp → Settings → Notifications → Call notifications is on with a tone (Fix 1), and Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Notifications → Call notifications is set to Alerting (Fix 2). If both are right, it's the battery sleep of Fix 3 — an app that's asleep when the call arrives can't ring.
Why do group chats notify me but personal chats don't?
Your channels are split: the Groups category is set to Alerting while Messages sits on Silent — either inside WhatsApp (Fix 1) or at the system level (Fix 2). Check both layers per category; a one-sided silence is always a per-category setting, never a global fault.
