You finish an update, unlock your phone, and the home screen looks half-empty. The apps you tap every day — gone. For a second it feels like the update wiped everything. It almost certainly didn't: your apps are still installed, and only their icons vanished. Disappearing icons after an update is a known launcher hiccup on Android, and the fixes are usually a few settings away.
The 5 fixes below run from the quickest check to the deeper launcher repairs. Covers Android 10 through 14, with steps for Samsung (One UI), Google Pixel, and Xiaomi (HyperOS).

Quick Answer: Missing icons after an update? First swipe up to open the app drawer — the apps are usually still there, and you can long-press any icon to put it back on the home screen. Not in the drawer either? Check hidden apps in your launcher settings, then clear the launcher's cache (Settings → Apps → One UI Home / Pixel Launcher / System launcher → Storage). One of these brings the icons back for most people.
In This Guide:
Why App Icons Disappear After an Update
Knowing what actually broke tells you which fix to reach for. When icons vanish right after an update, it's usually one of these:
- Only the shortcut was removed. The app is untouched — but its home-screen icon, which is just a shortcut, got dropped when the update rebuilt the layout.
- The launcher's saved layout got reset or corrupted. Your launcher (One UI Home, Pixel Launcher, Xiaomi's System launcher) stores icon positions in its own data, and an update can damage that data.
- The app got hidden or disabled. Launchers sometimes re-apply hide-app rules after an update. Rarely, an app ends up disabled during an update, which removes its icon from both the home screen and the drawer.
- The default launcher changed. Big updates occasionally switch the phone back to a different launcher — with its own blank home screen.
The thread connecting all four: your apps are almost certainly still installed. The fixes below start simple and go deeper.
Fix 1: Check the App Drawer First
Before anything clever — open the app drawer, the full list of every app on your phone. Most of the time the "missing" apps are sitting right there; only their home-screen shortcuts are gone.

- Swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to open the app drawer. (Some phones use an app-drawer icon — the little grid of dots — instead.)
- Search for the missing app in the drawer's search bar at the top.
- Found it? Long-press the icon and drag it to the home screen, or open its menu and choose "Add to Home screen."
- Repeat for each missing icon — and peek inside folders, since updates can sweep icons into auto-created ones.
Samsung users, one special case: if swiping up does nothing at all, the update may have flipped your phone to "Home screen only" mode — no app drawer exists. Go to Settings → Display → Home screen and switch on "Show apps screen on Home screen." Once the drawer is back, find your apps and drag them home.
App found in the drawer and re-added? You're done. App not in the drawer at all? Keep going.
Fix 2: Check for Hidden Apps
Most launchers let you hide apps for privacy — and after an update, that hide-apps list can get re-applied or extended. The result: apps invisible everywhere, while still installed.
- Long-press an empty spot on the home screen.
- Tap Settings (Samsung: Home settings or Settings; Pixel: Home settings; Xiaomi: More or the settings icon).
- Look for "Hide apps" or "Hidden apps" and open it.
- If your missing apps are in the hidden list, tap them to unhide — the icons return to the app drawer right away.
- Drag the recovered icons back onto the home screen (Fix 1).
On some Samsung phones the option lives elsewhere: open the app drawer, tap the three-dot menu, and look for "Hide apps" there.
Fix 3: Clear the Launcher's Cache and Data
Apps not in the drawer and not hidden? Then the launcher's own saved data is the prime suspect. Your launcher keeps a database of icon positions and drawer contents — when an update corrupts it, icons vanish even though the apps are fine. Clearing the cache rebuilds that database without touching your apps.

- Open Settings → Apps (Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps).
- Find your launcher: "One UI Home" on Samsung, "Pixel Launcher" on Pixel, "System launcher" on Xiaomi. You may need "See all apps" plus "Show system apps" from the three-dot menu to see it.
- Tap Storage (or Storage & cache), then Clear cache. Check whether the icons came back.
- If not, repeat and this time tap Clear data. This fully resets the launcher — folders, icon positions, widget layouts — so screenshot your home screen first if you want to rebuild it exactly.
After clearing data, the missing apps should list in the drawer again. Also check Settings → Apps for the missing app itself — if it shows as "Disabled," tap it and choose Enable.
Fix 4: Restore the "Show Apps Screen" Setting
Sometimes the launcher's data is fine and its configuration is what changed. Updates can flip home-screen settings back to defaults — the drawer mode changes, or the toggle that auto-adds new icons to the home screen switches off. Nothing actually disappeared; the launcher is just displaying differently.
- Samsung (One UI): Settings → Display → Home screen — make sure "Show apps screen on Home screen" is enabled. Then long-press the home screen → Settings → turn on "Add new apps to Home screen."
- Google Pixel: long-press the home screen → Home settings → check "Add app icons to Home screen" (wording varies by Android version) and switch it on.
- Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO (HyperOS or MIUI): Settings → Home screen — choose "With app drawer" as the layout (not "Classic," which dumps every icon onto home-screen pages and can bury apps when pages overflow). Also enable "Add new apps to Home screen" if it's listed.
- Then re-add any missing icons from the app drawer (Fix 1) — the update won't put them back on its own.
This fix also helps when the home screen just looks "wrong" after an update — rearranged icons, folders you never made.
Fix 5: Switch the Default Launcher and Restart
If nothing above worked, the update may have switched your default launcher — or the current one is stuck. Re-selecting the home app forces Android to rebuild the home experience, which can surface icons that exist but stay invisible.
- Open Settings → Apps → Default apps → Home app (labeled "Launcher" on Xiaomi/HyperOS).
- If an unexpected launcher is selected after the update, switch back to the stock one — One UI Home, Pixel Launcher, or System launcher. If the stock one is already selected, switch to another briefly and back; that can refresh a stuck icon database.
- Restart the phone — hold the power button and tap Restart.
- After the restart, open the app drawer and re-add any icons still missing from the home screen.
Third-party launcher users (Nova, Niagara, and similar): update the launcher from the Play Store — outdated launchers commonly cause vanishing icons after a system update. And on HyperOS 2 and newer, Xiaomi restricts setting third-party launchers as default, so if the switch won't stick, that's the phone enforcing it, not a bug.
What If Nothing Works?
Still missing icons after all five fixes? Run these last-resort checks:
- Verify the app is installed: Play Store → profile → Manage apps & device → Manage, check the Installed tab. If the app shows "Install" instead of "Open," the update removed it — reinstalling brings the icon back.
- Check your user profile: a secondary user, guest, or work profile only shows that profile's apps. Switch back to your main profile via the quick-settings user icon.
- Restore from backup: Samsung — Settings → Accounts and backup → Restore data, deselect everything except "Home screen," and restore. Other phones — check your Google One backup.
- Reset app preferences: Settings → Apps → three-dot menu → Reset app preferences → confirm. This restores default permissions and disabled-app states without deleting personal data.
If the icons are still gone after all of this, a factory reset is the final option — back up first (Settings → System → Backup; Samsung: Settings → Accounts and backup).

Frequently Asked Questions
Did the update delete my apps?
Almost never. Updates remove home-screen shortcuts or corrupt the launcher's icon layout while the apps themselves stay installed. Check the app drawer (swipe up) or the Play Store's Installed list to confirm. If an app is truly gone, reinstalling from the Play Store usually keeps your data.
Why do my icons disappear after every update?
When it repeats, the launcher's saved layout is probably getting corrupted by updates, or a third-party launcher isn't fully compatible with your Android version. Clearing the launcher's data (Fix 3) gives you a clean slate, keeping the launcher updated keeps it compatible, and leaving "add apps to Home screen" on (Fix 4) keeps new and updated apps visible.
Will clearing the launcher's data delete my apps or accounts?
No. Clearing One UI Home, Pixel Launcher, or System launcher data only resets the launcher's own settings — icon positions, folders, widget layouts. Installed apps, accounts, photos, and chats are untouched. You'll just need to re-arrange the home screen afterward, so screenshot it before clearing data.
